Ecumenical Theological Seminary (ETS) will celebrate its 39th commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 1 at its historic sanctuary at 2930 Woodward Avenue in Midtown Detroit.

Twenty graduates will receive degrees in Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry (MAPM), Master of Divinity (MDIV) and Doctor of Ministry (DMIN). Also, Urban Ministry Diplomas will be awarded at the commencement ceremony.

The commencement address will be given by Bishop Dr. Barbara L. King, founder and minister of Hillside International Truth Center, Inc. in Atlanta. Dr. King received her Doctor of Ministry degree from ETS in 2012 at the age of 81. “Dr. Barbara,” as she is affectionately known, is a civil rights leader who marched with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and is recognized for her work with King’s Chicago movement.

This past winter, the interfaith chapel at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was renamed in Dr. King’s honor.

Five of the graduates also will give remarks during the ceremony. They are: Carolyn George (UMD), David Jefferson (MAPM), Scharron Rambus (MDIV), April Hearn (DMIN) and Randal Meyers (APCE-DMIN).

Also, the late Rev. Dr. J. Harold Ellens, a former ETS professor of Biblical Studies who passed away in 2018, will be conferred the honorary status of Faculty Emeritus.
