The Congregational Church of Birmingham, UCC is actively seeking to fill the position of BRIDGE PASTOR. The church is looking for individuals to begin January 1, 2022.
After 11 years with the church, the senior pastor is retiring at the end of this year. It is anticipated that the Bridge Pastor will serve from four up to approximately nine months. This will be a full-time position to tend to the congregation, especially in worship and
pastoral care.
We are looking for a caring person with strong preaching skills, supportive of our ONA and social justice programs, familiar with digital media and the realities of the post-covid church, and with interest in nurturing people in difficult times.
The Bridge Pastor position will have the following responsibilities and work schedule: Responsibilities:
Plan and lead a meaningful Sunday Worship Experience by coordinating:
Music offerings with the Choir Director and the Accompanist
The participation of children in worship with the Christian Education (CE) Director
Visual themes with the worship design team of the Worship Ministry
Preparation of bulletins for each service with the church Administrative Assistant
Work in this endeavor with the Worship Ministry
Meet with and counsel Congregation members in need of pastoral care and support:
Be accessible to Congregation members in their spiritual needs.
Visit those in hospitals and those homebound or in nursing homes
Work with the Community Caring for Current Members Ministry to coordinate care in the Congregation
Communicate with the Congregation (e.g., email/Mail Chimps, social media, livestreaming, website, etc.), with the assistance of the Media & Communications Specialist as needed
Meet regularly with and supervise the hired and contracted staff
Participate with members of the Vision Circle and Leadershi p Assembly in their meetings, and other teams as requested
Assist the Congregation through a healthy pastoral change process
Counsel with the family members and plan/officiate at funerals/memorial services
Counsel with wedding partners and plan/officiate at weddings
Work with the Community Welcoming for Future Members Ministry to reach out to
prospective members
Represent CCB at local and regional UCC and other appropriate community meetings
Support Stephen Ministry
Support youth confirmation programs, in cooperation with the CE Director
Support Adult Christian Education, in cooperation with the CE Director
Perform such duties as shall arise from time to time that are appropriate to this position
Work Schedule:
This is a full-time salaried position that will require an estimated 40 hours a week with one full day off and two half days per week. This includes a mandatory requirement of leading the worship program and participating each Sunday, but with one week with a Sunday off every three months. Reasonable absences are expected. Notice must be given to the Moderator and Worship Ministry Coordinator seven days in advance except in case of illness or family emergency.
The appointment will have a competitive compensation package and will begin 1 January 2022 to run until the settled pastor starts work, probably in three to nine months. The Bridge Pastor is not required to counsel the Settled Pastor Search Committee and is not eligible to apply for the Settled Pastor position.
