Career Objective: to help people find faith in Christ and use their gifts in ministry, through the Presbyterian Church USA, as they serve Christ in the world
 

Education:

  • 1971, Springfield College, Springfield, MA, B.S., Community Leadership and Development – YMCA Leadership

  • 1974, M. Div., Andover Newton Theological School (including Middler year at New College, University of Edinburgh, Scotland)

  • 1992, M.A.T.S, Moravian Theological Seminary, Bethlehem, PA (including three courses at Princeton Theological Seminary), thesis: “The Doctrine of Providence in the Reformed Confessions of Faith” 

  • 2002, D. Min., McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago IL, doctoral project: “Collaborative Models of Multicultural Ministry”


Continuing education: most recently ten years in a study cohort with Dr. Gil Rendle, on the theme of the church in mission to its community. Certified interpreter of the Myers Briggs Personality Indicator  


Professional service as ordained PCUSA minister since 1974.

  • 1974 – 1989 three associate pastor positions in Sparta, NJ, Arlington Heights, IL, and Bethlehem PA.

  • 1989 – 1996 Senior Pastor, Bethesda (MD) Presbyterian Church

  • 1996 – 2004 Senior Associate Pastor, and Head of Staff, First Presbyterian Church, Evanston IL

  • 2004 – 2019 Executive Presbyter, Presbytery of Detroit (MI)

  • 2006 to present, Adjunct Professor, Ecumenical Theological Seminary, Detroit, teaching the courses required for ordination in the Presbyterian Church: Reformed Theology, Biblical Interpretation, Reformed Worship and Sacraments, Presbyterian History and Polity. I also teach these courses to educators seeking PCUSA certification for the General Assembly, PCUSA.


Publications: book reviews for the Presbyterian Outlook magazine on the theme of the missional church


Volunteer activities:

  • 31 Year Rotarian, serving in all the offices of the four clubs, including President of the Detroit Rotary Club. Currently Chair, Charitable Trust Committee, and Board Member Andover Rotary Club.

  • Serving the presbyteries in which I held membership. Currently on the Commission of Ministry, Presbytery of Northern New England. Recently I taught a class for elder moderators for the presbytery.  

  • Sailing Instruction. Flying Scots program, Instruction Chair and instructor, Detroit Yacht Club, Detroit, MI. 2006-2019.
     

Family: Married to Janna C. Roop, R.N., Ph.D., retired professor of nursing, Wayne State University, and four grown children and their spouses.
